CHAPTER 14

As Deputy Clayton had remarked earlier, there was still most of a full moon hovering over the Brazos River when they passed Clem Shaw’s stable again and left the sleeping town of Glory behind them. Bannack was able to see a good distance down the road before him as he held the buckskin to a comfortable lope, intent upon eating up the miles in a hurry before easing him back to a walk. As a result, in good time they approached the creek where Clayton and Priest had been ambushed. Since it was an excellent place to rest the horses, they decided to stop there again, in spite of the deputies’ experience there before. There was almost a zero possibility that the Dawsons would anticipate the night trip to Jacksboro. There was also the presence of Marshal John Cochran, which both deputies felt added to their defensive prowess. As far as Bannack was concerned, he felt certain Henry Dawson would not be there before nine or ten o’clock the next day. So, with an eye on Deputy Priest’s watch, they watered and rested the horses at the creek and made a pot of coffee to help them all stay alert.

“This is one creek I’ll always remember,” Conrad Priest announced. “Has it got a name?”

Bannack shrugged before he answered. “Buster Bridges told me the local folks call it Razor Creek.” When Priest asked why they called it that, Bannack said, “Supposedly because it cuts such a sharp line through this heavy growth of trees.”

“I can see that,” Priest said. “It’s a good name for it.”

“I reckon,” Bannack replied. “Keep in mind, I said Buster told me that.”

They left the creek and pushed on until they were within two to three miles of the town limits of Jacksboro, which prompted Bannack to pull his horse to a stop. “I don’t think even Henry Dawson is crazy enough to come this far to ambush you again,” he told Clayton. “So I reckon I’ll turn around here and go back to my little town. I’ll tie your packhorse on behind Deputy Priest’s horse.”

“Marshal Cochran, Conrad and I owe you one helluva lot,” Clayton said. “And I hope you know how much we appreciate it.”

“That’s a fact, John,” Priest said. “There ain’t no way a town marshal or sheriff could do as much as you did to recover and replace so much of what Bill and I lost on this damn prisoner transport. It looks like we just wasted your time on this midnight ride tonight, but it woulda been pretty rough on the two of us, if we had guessed wrong and you hadn’t come with us. I know you’ve got to get back to Glory, otherwise, I’d invite you to come on into town with us, so we could buy you a big breakfast before you ride back.”

“Ain’t you forgot?” Clayton asked Priest. “You’re broke. Virgil’s pappy stole all our money.”

“Hell, that’s right. I forgot about that. Anyway, it’s the thought that counts.
